St Kilda Botanical Garden Gates 2010 - 2012
Commissioned by City of Port Phillip
Procured by Tender and Community Consultation
Location: Saint Kilda Botanical Garden, St Kilda
Materials: Forged iron, core 10 steel, stainless steel, brass, copper, and glass.
The garden has a landscape architecture based in traditional Victorian designs.
Symmetry is a key element in Victorian design and five gates add gravitas and symmetry to this Garden.
The main gate – the Forgotten Entrance - designed to complement the original features found in the Garden. For posterity, it celebrates milestones throughout 150 years of the Garden’s people, plants and structures. The arbor provides formality and framing. Its canopy is a gestural form incorporating native flora, cypress trees and nautical history of St Kilda.
At the corners of the garden, sit the ‘play space entrance’ and the ‘indigenous plant garden entrance’ - friendlier and lighter in feel to the main gate, referencing motifs to the corner in which you enter.
The Map Gate schematically defines the main features of the garden, emphasising the recreational aspects. Highlighted are the rose garden, rotunda, playground, glasshouse, cultural centre and pond.
The Community Gate speaks to those who visit the Botanical Gardens – through symbols representing artists, poets, and musicians.
