Incendium - Montalto Sculpture Prize 2022

Event: Montalto Sculpture Prize 2022

Materials: Mild steel, polished copper

Liberty, enlightenment, and passion are held in a torch.

Fire, a primary force, is instrumental to my practice.

The burning bush, ignited by flame but not consumed, theologically, symbolises the presence of the divine.

The inferno is an integral part of the Australian continent’s natural cycle. Traditional custodians used conflagration as a tool to give way to new growth, replenish the earth with precious minerals and carve out landscape. Native flora has evolved over millennia and developed special characteristics that require fire to regenerate or to release their seeds.

When Europeans arrived in Australia, they broke a pattern of frequent, low heat bushfire. We, who call this island home, experience both the awe and consternation of the vehement firestorm.

Climate change threatens to push the landscape beyond habitability.

Have we, as weary drivers, been blinded?

Sculpture Incendium speaks of liberty, enlightenment and passion held in a torch by artist David Wood.
