Tsunami of Towers - Montague

Oils on Canvas

At the forge downstairs and studio/home upstairs in Thistletwaite Street, I have seen the city skyline change on a daily basis in front of my eyes.

I live on the edge of the largest urban development in Australia - Fishermen’s Bend - in what is now known by the City of Port Phillip, the Montague Ward. An industrial and residential precinct.

Change is inevitable and in Montague Ward it is rapid.

One year there is a clear view of what is dubbed the ‘Beyonce’ tower to only be obstructed by what I have nicknamed the ‘Three Stooges.’ I love Melbourne. I love the skyline. The ‘Three Stooges’ just seems ill considered - perhaps objectionable?

The latter view is yet to find a canvas.

Is it these rapidly rising towers lack any verve or memorability, as they envelope and swallow not just our view from our home but potentially demolish the things the community loves about old South Melbourne?

Is the chaos and destruction what the community pays for progress and gentrification, or is it just accepting the reality of urban planning, consultation and development in 2020s?

Some in Thistletwaite said they saw the writing on the wall and moved quickly to another hood, others are generational businesses who stay for a multitude of coherent reasons putting trust in those who play with the size of the Tsunami.

Does the sitting blank piece of canvas deserve new brushes of paint?
